Three Decades of Experience
EHA began its disaster management initiatives in 1991. Initially limited to medical relief, the increasing number of disasters led to the official establishment of the Disaster Management & Mitigation Unit (DMMU) in 2006.
Since then, we have responded to earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis, floods, fires, avian flu, ethnic conflicts, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Our interventions have even taken EHA's medical teams internationally—to Kosovo and Albania in 1999 alongside the UNHCR, and to the Nepal earthquake in 2015.
Today, the DMMU operates with a three-pronged long-term strategy: Emergency Response, Disaster Preparedness, and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
Emergency Disaster Response
Guided by our Emergency Response Framework (ERF) and basic humanitarian principles, our main objective is to alleviate the suffering of disaster victims. We focus on the most marginalized populations—whether by economic status, region, age, or disability.
EHA is committed to achieving Real Time Emergency Response (RTER) using trained Quick Response Teams (QRT), smart technology, and our grassroots Disaster Response Network (DRN).

Disaster Preparedness (DP)
DP must begin at the community level. By engaging local volunteers as natural first responders, we can achieve real-time response and save more lives.
Institutional preparedness is also critical—covering healthcare facilities, schools, and public spaces. Our approach is holistic and inclusive, ensuring "No One is Left Behind" by specifically engaging vulnerable groups like pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
Subscribing to the Sendai declaration, we work toward the substantial reduction of disaster risk, losses in lives, and economic assets.
Through our DEEM Training Centre (est. 2007), we prepare Community First Responders. We provide training in First Aid, Fire Safety, Basic Rescue, Evacuation, Psychosocial Care, and School Safety Programs in partnership with SEEDS and Save the Children.

EHA is a founding member of Sphere India. We work closely with the Government, UNICEF, Geo Hazards International (GHI), WHO, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). We also initiated the Healthcare Emergency Alliance (HEAL) to establish a medical emergency network across South Asian countries.
